THE CIVIL WAR
2015 - Present

Houthi Rebels in Sana'a
Yemen is split between Sunni and Shiite Muslims. Over the years, high fuel prices and general dislike for President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi and his government led to a building unrest with the Shiite.
After failed negotiations with the president in 2015, the Houthi insurgents (Shiite rebels backed by Iran) took control of Yemen's capital, Sana'a, thus starting the civil war in Yemen.

A decade of war has lead to heavy civilian casualties from unlawful airstrikes, a country wide famine, and outbreaks of deadly diseases such as cholera.
