CULTURE AND SOCIETY

Family at Home in Yemen
The culture in Yemen is heavily influenced by it's main religion, Islam. Social and individual interactions are determined by customary law and religious regulations, which include structured series of verbal exchanges and salutations in greeting or saying good-bye and the avoidance of women who are not close relatives.

People are physically close during social interactions. During tribal and ritual ceremonies, people stand in a circular arrangement. Other cultural values include hospitality, respect for elders, decency, and good manners while eating from a communal dish.
A Family
All citizens are considered equal under law, but there exists a social structure based on Islam - with the top class being descendants of the Prophet Muhammad.
Yemen is still a patriarchal society with an existing cultural stereotype against women. Arranged child marriages are an ongoing issue in the country.
